In order to escape the future into a “ghost town”, the Italian town of Ollolai has decided to sell 200 abandoned homes for just one euro ($ 1.2) per unit, according to CNN.
However, homebuyers must commit to renovating these abandoned homes within three years. The area of each apartment ranges from 40-150 sqm, the cost of repairing each unit is estimated at $ 25,000.
Once the capital of the Barbagian mountains of Sardinia on the Mediterranean Sea, the town of Ollolai is known for its pristine beauty and serenity and its distinctive traditional cuisine.
However, the population in this town has declined by almost half as young people migrate to large cities, with sloping rates. So many old houses in the village have been abandoned and slowly deteriorated over the years, with houses built 200 years ago.
Mayor Efisio Arbau persuaded local people to hand over their abandoned homes to the authorities.
“This campaign is to save our traditional values from being forgotten and forgotten, and we are always tough and will not let our town die,” he said.
The Mayor issued a special decree last year and offered to sell the homes on the real estate market for one euro. So far, the town has sold three homes and more than 100 potential customers from all over the world, including Russia and Australia, who have expressed interest in becoming new residents in the town of Ollolai.
“These beautiful old houses are built on the granite of Sardinia, the rocks are only on the top of the mountain or along the coast,” Arbau said.
Local authorities hope the new owners will invest in renovating their old homes, thereby revitalizing the economy and living in this beautiful town.
